Greetings, Bohemians! For months we’ve watched with Green Fairy eyes of envy as post after post featuring Moulin Rouge! The Musical’s elaborate sets and lavish costumes were splashed over social media. Our jealousy peaked last week when, in a shower of fireworks and confetti, the highly-anticipated musical finally opened on Broadway.
It received plenty of praise from critics, including the New York Times who hailed it as “a cloud-surfing, natural high of a production” and we wondered, will it ever come to Australia?
The answer is yes! Yesterday, Luhrmann, along with wife Catherine Martin and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews, announced that after its Broadway run, the screen-to-stage production will open at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre in 2021.
The musical, based on Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-winning 2001 film, will be produced by Global Creatures (Strictly Ballroom, Muriel’s Wedding the Musical). And like the film, it will include a line-up of loveable flamboyant characters and feature a huge array of classic pop anthems from artists OutKast, Beyoncé, the White Stripes, Britney, Lady Gaga and more. Moulin Rouge! The Musical is sure to be nothing short of spectacular, spectacular!
